Our Dojo

The West Los Angeles Dojo is an official branch of the international Bujinkan organization, headed by Soké Masaaki Hatsumi, the inheritor of nine classical Japanese Samurai and Ninjutsu martial arts and combat strategies. We instruct students in this complete martial art system, which is characterized by a rich tradition of authentic Bujutsu, the hand-to-hand and weapons skills of Japan’s Samurai.

Taijutsu

Taijutsu is the term that describes the foundation of movement, which includes:

  • Structural Alignment

  • Balance

  • Coordination

  • Footwork

These skills are taught within the study of Samurai & Ninjutsu unarmed combat and weapons

Jujutsu

Classical Japanese Jujutsu is a methodology through both armed and unarmed fighting scenarios, of combat skills within the study of Taijutsu, which encompasses the use of

  • Joint-locks (Kansetsu Waza)

  • Throws (Nage Waza)

  • Chokes (Shime Waza)

  • Attack/Receiving Methods (Atemi/Ukemi)

Sword

Kenjutsu is a primary study within the weapons curriculum and Taijutsu development. Kenjutsu cultivates the students' timing, accuracy and concentration

  • Etiquette (Saho)

  • Sword Drawing (Batto/Iaijutsu)

  • Paired Forms (Kumitachi)

  • Movement and Footwork (Tai Sabaki)

  • Two Swords (Nito/Shinken Gata)

  • Capturing/Evading Swords (Muto Dori)

Within the study of Classical Japanese Martial Arts, there is a vast array of traditional weapons that were utilized by Samurai and within Ninjutsu. The symbiotic relationship between weapons and taijutsu cultivates the ability to incorporate any weapon at any time
